What is hot?
Janhvi Kapoor, Gulshan Devaiah starrer Ulajh promises a good and interesting plot. It is a thriller and it has its highs and lows. In parts, Ulajh is entertaining with some moments that will leave you in a state of shock. There are many twist and turns as the story progresses. Janhvi Kapoor as Suhana Bhatia is pretty good. The actress who marked her debut in 2008 with Dhadak is slowing proving that she has the capability to excel in complicated characters. She has proved that she is more than just a pretty face and wise enough when it comes to picking up projects. She isn’t in a rush to pick up cliché commercial films, rather is trying to explore and experiment. Ulajh being a female-led film, Janhvi Kapoor has a few powerful scenes that do leave an impact. Gulshan Devaiah, of course, is the hero here even though he is the villain. He is an actor par excellence and can pull off any role with ease. Whether it is Char Kut Atmaram in Guns & Gulaabs or a serious officer Devilal Singh in Dahaad, Gulshan always brings the best to the table. Ulajh is no different. Roshan Matthew also has a significant role to play in the film and he does a fine job. He brings the emotion, the fun and the thrill to Ulajh. The supporting cast of Adil Hussain, Rajesh Tailang and others is wisely chosen.
The direction by Sudhanshu Saria is pretty neat. While action thrillers are proving to be a perfect recipe for box office hits, the makers of Ulajh have smartly kept violence and maar-dhaad to only where necessary. The film being a thriller does not hold many songs but Shaukan has become our favourite. Janhvi does bring glam too along with her!
What is not?
The movie is very predictable after a point. The biggest flaw of Ulajh though is that the first half moves very slowly. Literally, at snail pace and that may not go well with the audience. It is only after the interval that the story gets interesting. The scripting could have been crisp and characters could have been given more layers and depth. Meiyang Chang is talent wasted in the film. He barely has any scenes in Ulajh.
Verdict:
Ulajh could have been much more than what it is but it is still a one time watch movie. The ending scene does drop a surprise for the fans so wait for it!
